Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], October 19 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday invited the protesting doctor to meet her on Monday and appealed to them to call off the fast and protest and resume duty.
“The Chief Secretary and Home Secretary met us and we had a telephone conversation with the CM. She invited us to Nabanna for a meeting on Monday at 5 p.m. CM is requesting us to get back to work as the health infrastructure is going down. We want to tell the CM to fulfill our demands and then we will get back to work. We hope that the CM understands our demands and she will fulfill them after the meeting,” a protesting junior doctor said.
The protesting doctors further said that they would attend the meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee.
“We want to inform you that our health workers and doctors returned to work. Few of us are here on hunger strike for 10 demands… We will attend the meeting (with CM Mamata Banerjee) on Monday at 5 pm,” a protesting junior doctor said.
Chief Secretary Manoj Pant said that the government is taking action according to the directions which were given by the CM.
“We are taking action according to the directions which were given by the CM. It has been suggested to hold a meeting on Monday with the members of the front,” Manoj Pant said.
Earlier, junior doctors here continued their hunger strike in solidarity with the West Bengal Junior Doctors front.
The hunger strike by the doctors has been going on since the last 324 hours.
The strike came after doctors demanded justice for a fellow resident doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
On October 15, the Indian Medical Association announced that the IMA Junior Doctors Network across the nation will be fasting in solidarity with the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front. (ANI)
